Protective Orders

Protective orders are designed for a very limited purpose, to protect individuals from abuse and threats of violence.    They should not be used to punish a person or to obtain custody of a child without haing to file formal custody proceedings, if there is no abuse. 

If you are the victim of abuse or your children are the victims are abuse at the  hands of a former spouse or significant other, you can file for a protective order to protect yourself and your children.     As stated above, it is improper to file a protective order just because you do not want to wait for child custody proceedings to begin.    There must be abuse or immediate threats of abuse.

If a protective order is granted, the rights of the alleged abuser can be severly restricted and that person could lose very important constitutional rights, including the right to carry a firearm.
